GCC League Campaign Opener ends in Defeat!

At 11am Saturday morning, Upswinger tweeted that three ducks were spotted sat on the square at the GCG (you can check the archives). Foolishly, it was pointed out that this was a bad omen for the visiting team “Greeneys Pink”. The rest of the story you can probably predict.

GCC's Man of the Match, Mark Dickinson. Unbeaten on 55

Claiming the toss since GP were late, skipper Westcar elected to bat with a strong line up – probably the best league team we have put out this season. After 5 overs we were into the 20’s thanks to a rapid start by Penalty Runs. Openers Will Smith and Olly Carrier chipping in too. On a green and slow track GCCs top order crumbled including Chris Lewis who arrived at the crease with his engine still warm, as it was when he left the crease too. With the arrival of Mark Dickinson a hopeful total of 100 appeared a possibility, but Mark soldiered on where most others had failed, to score an impressive 55* with GCC reaching 149ao. Ronald “Rocket” Pratley returning to GCC to provide one of the ducks.

At bat Pinkneys suffered early losses via wickets from GCC man of the match Dickinson and Jamie Vic. Then they went about the task of reaching Goring’s total with losing just 2 more batsmen courtesy of Matt Hodges. Pratley reminded us all as to have he achieved his nickname by allowing the opposition keeper to hit more than some of his deliveries into orbit.

Not a great start. And many would say we should have put them in to bat. What a wonderful thing the retrospectoscope can be. Castle Lager delivered on a silver coloured disposable tray to the victors from Westcar – and gratefully received. All played in good spirit as intended, looks like we need that Deeks boy back as soon as possible, and a visit next time not from the ducks but our very own lucky heron.

Next up – Pinkney’s fellow Premier fallers Emmbrook & Bearwod CC who went down by 99 runs to Ruislip Victoria this week.
