GCC In The Press: Henley Standard

Oxford University player Tim Deeks celebrated his return to the Goring 1st XI with an excellent 5 wicket haul against Pinkneys Green on Saturday in the Berkshire League.

Put in to bat on a very dry wicket and in hot conditions, the Pinkeys batting order, whilst eyeing a large total, immediately struggled with the pace and bounce of Deeks (5-55) combined with the metronomic accuracy of Pete Slade (4-23).

Persisting with this attacking tactic, in the face of some excellent Goring bowling, backed up with a strong fielding display and some creative field settings, failed to establish control over the game.  Indeed all the Pinkeys batsmen where caught, with stand in wicket keeper Will Smith, James Everitt and Jonny Russell taking some particularly fine catches close-in.

The Pinkeys innings failed to find any momentum, there were some brief glimmers when Atherton and Davy began to take on the attacking field with some powerful hitting.  At 90-8 the Pinkneys innings came alive briefly when no. 9 bat Withana hit a quick fire 23 including four boundaries off a lively Deeks over.    However the innings closed at 120 all out and handing Goring 64 overs to chase a modest total.

Despite a couple of early wickets for Atherton, Will Smith anchored the Goring reply with his second consecutive league half century and Jonny Russell played with trademark flair to ensure a straightforward victory for the visitors in 26 overs.
