At the start of this season we launched the “Cricket First” initiative with the not-insignificant aim of improving all aspects of our club and, as a result, reinstating the Saturday 2nd XI as soon as possible. In just a few months great progress has been made, including providing an independent umpire for league games, a 1st team scorer, a new club sponsor, sponsored shirts, free beer after league games and for the first time in our history a qualified professional coach. We can also proudly lay claim to offering our players and supports simply the best club web site on the planet. These improvements are of course fantastic but the future of our club really rests with maintaining and developing The Academy. Our Academy Director, Clive Everitt continues to do a fantastic job and this season he has been assisted by our professional coach Chris Ellison (http://www.performance-cricket.com/).
Academy coaching has taken place on Tuesday evenings from 5pm – 7:15pm and has been one of the big success stories of the season. In previous years we had not been able to offer cricket to children under 10 years old and as a result we had lost several to other local clubs. This year however Chris’ 5pm – 6pm coaching session has seen nearly 20 juniors ranging in age from just 6 up to 10 years old. The 6pm – 7:15pm session has seen 16 juniors aged between 11 and 13 years old. Feedback from both Academy members and their parents has been fantastic and we are already in talks with Chris regarding arrangements for indoor coaching for The Academy at the start of next season.
To conclude the professional coaching for this season Chris is running a three day Cricket school at the GCG between 9:30am and 3:30pm Tuesday to Thursday this week. Although there are a few places still available we already have between 8 and 11 Academy members signed up each day.
2010 has already seen big changes for our club and an Academy of nearly 40 juniors aged between 6 and 13 with a professional coach is a good start. My sincere and heartfelt plea to each one of you reading this is to “Stay another day” with GCC, together lets see what the future holds for our Club and please don’t be upset if you’re playing in our 4th XI in 2017.
