If you have enjoyed at least one item ever on this website over the last 4 months, we need your help. Perhaps this website is where you first heard the word “shart”? Or where you were first introduced to @Cola Boy69, The Yellow Bin or The Big Issue Lady?
GCC runs on two levels – the Committee, who decide on Sandwich fillings and waste valuable work hours doing this website – and the players, who turn out each week to support the club they love. Some of us do both. Whilst we would love more players to offer their services to help run the club and website (just ask), it’s also very much appreciated that people play for GCC, return to GCC – and Stay with GCC.
This Saturday, we play the biggest, most important match perhaps in our history. Think of the greatest sporting match-ups of all time – England vs. Australia in The Ashes, Tyson vs. Bruno, The Oxford To Cambridge Boat Race – well now it is our turn. Goring Cricket Club vs Charley Farley Hill.
We do lots of funny stuff on the website, but this is a serious plea. If we beat Farley Hill this weekend, we probably stay up. Defeat and the drop is likely.
What plans are you going to change to make yourself available to play – or even just support us on Saturday at home for this 70 pointer?
Personally, I am leaving the NCT Baby/Parent BBQ early to make myself available – and I am also unable to reach to put my socks on due to a cricket injury. But I am In. Winkers is willing to wait until Sunday to eat a whole roast chicken on his own. He is In. Jonny Russell and Will Smith have sold their cricket tickets to be available Saturday for the mighty GCC. They are In.
What about you? You know exactly who you are. What are you changing to make yourself available?
Alex Crawford – home is where the heart is. Think about it. Mark Dickenson – not even a postcard from you?
Being “In” is Committing – it’s not just about selection – but supporting the team too. Take a leaf out of uber-bloke Tom Ferry’s book. That’s commitment. He stepped up to help out, twice.
Sunday mornings are for car washing, sock drawer tidying, back waxing and T4. Fridays are for weddings, meals out/nights in or “getting off with birds”. Show this post to your loved ones. Let them know how important this Saturday afternoon is.

This note isn’t from The Committee or Jonny Westcar, but from me (aa). It’s taken quite some effort to pull us all back together as a Club, and now it is crunch time. Whatever happens at the end of the league season, we will continue with even more spirit, and Bloke Tests into the future. Last saturday we were devastated and downhearted at tea thinking that our chances of survival were slipping away in the damp at Shi*field.
Then something fantastic happened and we came out fighting and tore the them apart. It was awesome to be part of that team on Saturday and we need to recreate that for the rest of the season.
When Jonny took his steepling catch at deep mid-off the whole team sprinted the full length of the field to congratulate him. That’s what we want more of!
Saturday’s match is absolutely huge – if you have any GCC in your blood you will make yourself available!!

I have my brother and his family from Spain, my sister and her family from Sweden all meeting up for a very rare family reunion this saturday only. My wife is doing flowers for a wedding so I am carless which means a two hour train journey with cricket gear from Epsom. What time is fielding practice before the game starts? After last Saturday at Shinhole I would be available if it was Glasgow away on New Year’s Eve.
Available if selected as I expect is the same for everyone.

If we want to win, to play division 1 cricket next year, to fully realise the first step in our cricket first mission, to return to the club the same commitment and opportunties it gives to us as players, we have to take the win, to take the win we need to play with commitment and passion, with skill and courage, to play for the team not the for individual. Go the Maroon and Gold, Can’t wait until Saturday.

Just to back-up Jonny R’s post, last Saturday’s game was one of the greatest cricket matches I’ve ever played in. And it was at Shinfield. Away. And it was drizzly. And there was tesco blue stripe crisps for tea.
The team spirit when we were bowling was electric and testament to all the hard work that’s been put in the year. It has certainly not been wasted.
Sunny and home to Farley Hill with div 1 status to play for. It’s a no brainer really. Sorry Tom, your BBQ can wait til 9pm. (or not at all if we win!)

I was taking Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie out for cream teas & scones by the river in Henley, then back to mine for nookie, but she’ll have to wait as the need for the GCC is too much. I wonder if she likes jam?

I came back to GCC because I wanted to contribute to making this club great again. I believe we will succeed.
This Saturday ranks right up there with Purley in 2003 in terms of importance. That day we had to win our last match against the unbeaten Division 1 champions just to stay up. The intensity and concentration was immense. We survived.
I commit myself to everything I do. If you don’t and go in half-arsed, you will ultimately fail. This Saturday, Farley Hill will not stand a chance we come out with the same controlled aggression that we showed last week. In a nutshell we were too hot for Shinfield to handle.
My aim is to score 500 league runs this season. I will happily take 3 ducks if GCC win all of our remaining 3 matches. That’s how much staying up means to me.
