Match Report – Sunday XI Away to West Ilsley 17 April 2011

The catchily titled "WICG"

The Sunday cricket season started in fantastic fashion, on a beautiful spring day, seeing a strong Goring side defeat West Ilsley by 97 runs. New Sunday skipper Tom Ferry started in positive fashion, winning the toss and opting to bat. Goring’s batsmen then produced an excellent display with the bat, racking up 224 runs for 3 wickets in their 40 overs. This included some big hitting from 20/20 skipper, Jonny Russell, and club new boy, Steve James. There were also two early season 50’s for Steve [Stephen] Wincott and Simon Butterfield (both of whom displayed excellent sportsmanship [oh, how we have changed…] in retiring on their half centuries to give others a start for the new season). Goring finished their innings in good fashion with runs coming at more than a run a ball for the last 8 overs.

In reply West Ilsley (127 ao) were kept under constant pressure by some excellent fielding and bowling, losing wickets regularly. Peter Slade, Kensa Barton and Len Sexon took 3 wickets each and were backed up by two excellent catches from Steve James, who also took a wicket. All in all it was a fabulous team display, on a beautiful ground, against a very friendly and sporting opposition.
