Match Report :: Ferrymen vs. ICL – 8 May 2011

After the early season rain had finally raised its head Goring took on ICL Bracknell with a very young side (4 under 13’s) and a strong bowling line up. Skipper (Ferry) won the toss and immediately put ICL Bracknell in to bat on a pitch expected to contain more than a few demons. This was quickly proved to be the case, as Ferry, Hedge and then Barton kept the batsman honest on a pitch that was spitting with alarming regularity. After some tight overs Hedge and Ferry were able to remove ICL’s opening batsmen, with credit going to youngster McGee for taking a good catch (something his elders [Captain?] could learn from).

Wyatt at 3 for Bracknell was offering some strong resistance, and though he was almost run out by the wicket keeper early on (“Their Umpire” making the call) he would go on to make 70. ICL continued to lose wickets, through a mixture of good bowling and an eagerness to push on, with Sexon proving what a fine spinner he is taking 4 wickets. ICL were able to post a competitive total of 169, having lost 9 wickets.

Goring’s innings started again in dramatic fashion as youngster Bartle was bowled by a ball that looked to have popped and was followed, despite some excellent shots, by McGee and Tong-Jones (all U 13) leaving Goring 24 for 3. Wincott and Sexon looked to offer some stability, taking Goring to 59 with some fine stroke play. However, after Sexon was first bowled and then Wincott adjudged LBW by “Their Umpire”, Goring looked in all sorts of trouble at 59 for 5. At this stage Humphreys came out to bat, aged 12 he showed fantastic maturity in batting out the draw, despite batsmen falling at the other end; facing 56 balls in a rock solid innings. Goring finished 85 for 8, with the Herculean Humphries and Hedge guiding them home.

Goring continued their fine unbeaten start to the season; in no small part thanks to the fantastic efforts of youngster Humphreys who, once again, was Man of the Match [“King Of The ‘Ring“].
