Match Report :: Ferrymen “at” Checkendon – 15 May 2011

In mixed weather conditions, despite offering some stern resistance, Goring CC’s young Sunday team finally succumbed to defeat.

Electing to bat first Goring lost wickets at regular intervals in their innings of 152 all out. Only Richard Averill (scoring his first 50 for the club), starts from Russell and Wincott, and a memorable 50 ball duck by Bartle, offered real resistance. The only other highlight of the innings was Wincott amusing himself, on what proved, a remarkably sturdy playground swing.

Given recent success with the ball Goring went into Checkendon’s innings with a certain amount of confidence. Skipper Ferry took early punishment, leading to the swift introduction of 12 year old Humphreys, 3 overs and 2 wickets later Goring were feeling on top again. Unfortunately Checkendon pushed on with some big hitting, both Breakspear’s being particularly impressive. Goring went on to show excellent late spirit, forcing Checkendon to collapse from 134 for 3 to 148 for 7 in 7 excellent overs from Humphreys and Barton (including a “Blue Moon” event, skipper Ferry holding a catch).

Checkendon were outstanding hosts and it turned out to be an excellent game of cricket. Goring have every reason to be proud of the way they kept on trying, a really good effort was given by all (in particular their 4 under 14 players).
