Match Report :: Academy U13 vs Cumnor CC – 15 May 2011

The Goring First IIX’s got off to a strong start this season in the Gauntlett Goblet Tournament on Sunday, beating the visitors Cumnor CC by 64 runs, 270 v 206.

Goring Captain A. McGee won the toss and elected to bowl in the “good [up]swing conditions”. And swing was promptly delivered with 3 wickets being taken in the first 4 Overs by McGee and C. Humphreys, the net effect being Cumnor were 14 runs down after 4 overs. Up stepped C. Edwards and J. Hurrell, Edwards began with a fine Maiden Over, Hurrell raised with a wicket, which Edwards then matched, Hurrell finished with 5 dot balls and a single. Next to bowl in his first appearance for Goring CC was R. Hale, picking up a fine wicket thanks to a quick thinking catch by T. Castle. No more wickets were taken in the remaining overs, however R. Brown led the way in keeping the scoring rate down with several fine dot balls. Awesome wicket keeping by O. Tong-Jones who at one stage had enough confidence in his bowlers to remove his helmet – briefly! With their last pairing and 16 Overs later, Cumnor were finally able to climb above their starting score of 200, finishing at 206.

Break for Tea and a big thank you to the Tea Persons, simply marvellous, cake and everything just like Test Match Special.

Goring opened their batting pairs with Humphreys & Tong-Jones adding 22 runs between them (highest scoring pair), Tong-Jones added 20 without loss of wicket. Next up were Castle and Hale, despite giving away an easy catch Castle scored a fine 15. Hale got off the mark with his first run and no loss of wicket. Next Hurrell and Brown, with some simply insane running for 2’s when even Usain Bolt would be happy with a single, adding 17 which included 3 fab 4’s. McGee and Edwards followed apparently buoyed up, they continued the running with 5 more 2’s and a fine 4.

All in all, a fantastic start with Edwards awarded the match ball as Man of the Match!

Stats:

Humphreys 2 (net runs) & 1 (wicket taken)

Tong-Jones 20 & WK

Castle 15 & 0

Hale 1 & 1

Hurrell 2 & 1

Brown 8 & 0

McGee 17 & 1

    What a great start to the season for GCC in all formats. Well done the Acacdemy! Also great to see an Edwards winning man of the match. Been a few years since, historically and statistically (look in the handbook), our greatest ever fielder M Edwards was collecting these awards.
