Match Report: Academy ‘v’ Brightwell-cum-Sotwell

Many thanks first of all to the boys and parents for turning out on a fine Summers evening for this rescheduled match.

Captained & Vice Captained by Charlie Edwards & Jonny Hurrell for the first time, the boys got back to winning ways with a convincing and crucial win, 248 to 270.

All of the batting performances were solid, however two stood out. Jonny with the highest score again of 24, including a “six”. Not far behind though, on 20, Charlie underlined an excellent Captaincy with his highest score this series.

After Tea Brightwell opened their scoring on a very strong note, the first pair finishing at 226 even after losing a wkt nicely bowled by Charlie. Brightwell continued their steady climb, always looking able to pass GCC’s 270. However, consistently strong bowling, fielding and wicket keeping by stand-in Robert, kept them at bay. Ryland picked up a wkt clean bowling his oppo’. Alfie collected one in his 1st and another in his 2nd over. Ray next, taking 1 wkt in his 2 overs. Somewhere around this time, Jonny managed a superb run out with a direct hit from about 25 yds which sent the bails flying.

And so to the final pair and final over. BCS needed 14 to win. A tall order but do-able given the quality of their batsmen. So BCS require 14 off 6, up stepped Chris, conceding a 4, then a single. Now it’s 9 off 4. With all of the GCC contingency feeling a tad tense, Chris nailed it, taking a wicket (great catch by Charlie), then conceded 2 but finishing them off with a run out on the final ball.

With their best win of the season, all of the boys more than deserved their reward by finishing top of their league and qualifying for the Gauntlett Goblet finals this Sunday at Abingdon Vale.

Man of the Match and match ball awarded to Chris for delivering under pressure, securing the win in the most tense of finishes.
