Goring hosted the local Berkshire League derby with Checkendon on Saturday at the Gardiner Recreation Ground.

Goring skipper and former Checkendon player Jonny Westcar won the toss and inserted Checkendon in excellent batting conditions. Opening batsmen Trotter and Allaway played the new ball well, playing an accurate Slade watchfully during the opening salvos. Vickery replaced Barton to have Trotter caught fending a lifter to slip in his first over. Form batsman Chib joined Allaway and began to build some momentum, ticking the scoreboard over with some fine shots until Allaway nicked a Slade outswinger through to Wincott, again at slip.

Chib and Manning consolidated seeing Checkendon through to 100 for the loss of 3 wickets at the 20 over mark, the hot weather keeping the bowlers rotating. Manning was bowled by Vickery looking to push the run rate on and Chib was bowled for a solid 44, playing a loose shot at Slade during his second spell.

This passage of play opened up the game and exposed the lower order to the left arm spin of Len Sexon who combined with Slade to dismiss the remaining Checkendon batsmen for 145 inside 33 overs. Pete Slade giving an excellent display to take 4 for 30 from 11 overs.

A crisp, dry white with a '62 vintage

Goring’s opening batmsen took on Checkendon’s modest total and attacking field settings with some gusto and perhaps a little luck, racing to 65 inside 10 overs for the first wicket, left hander Len Sexon taking on any bowling not on the stumps to good effect. Poodipeppi made the breakthrough bringing Kent to the crease who saw Sexon through to his 50. King Cobra Sexon was caught for 62 off 55 balls with the score on 94 but the Checkendon bowlers struggled to create any pressure on the new Goring batsmen, with Wincott and Kent scoring freely to put on 49 to take the game away from the visitors.
