League Match Report :: Goring CC vs. IBIS Mapledurham – 6th August 2011

Inserting IBIS was not a pleasurable experience for Matt - "We never did this in the 2nd XI"

Goring made the short trip to IBIS Mapledurham on Saturday in their return Berkshire League Division One fixture.

The Goring XI featured some changes to the side that had previously won two games in a row but a strong batting line up encouraged Goring to insert IBIS in some changeable weather conditions.

A very sharp catch one handed catch at short square leg by Matt Norman saw a wicket in the first over amongst a good opening spell from Peter Slade. Drury joined Lavers and played well for 41 in a 90 run partnership until he mis-hit Sexon and was caught at cover.

Lavers continued to strike the ball well through the on-side to keep the scoreboard moving but wickets fell at the other end at regular intervals. Lavers was eventually dismissed for 76 by a persevering Ross who bowled an immaculate 12 (“Twelve“) over spell for 38 runs. IBIS number 8 Orackly made a solid 34 and took IBIS to a 202 for 9.

The Goring response started well with new discovery, Len Sexon, finding runs effortlessly. However some accurate bowling brought about the dismissals of both openers with LBW decisions going against them. Wincott steadied the ship and Russell began to show some overdue form with his trademark flourish, Goring proceeding to 93 for 3 and well up with the required run-rate.

It was at this point the main difference between the two sides changed the game, with the IBIS bowlers keeping consistent pressure on the batsmen by bowling a wicket to wicket line. Wincott went LBW playing across the line and from there Goring had no answer with a total of 6 batsmen bowled or LBW largely to an excellent spell bowling from Rogerson supported by Barrett and Masters, the visitors were in danger of being bowled out with plenty of overs still available to the home side.

However, as the game had started – with some inspired cricket from Matt Norman and Pete Slade – so it finished. Slade and Norman played out the remaining 13 overs in a gutsy rearguard action to deny IBIS the win and preserve Gorings place mid-table.

Goring travel to league leaders South East Reading on Saturday in what will be a further test of their depth and resilience.
