A Double Header For Your Pleasure!

Ultras vs RAF Benson

This was the Ultras first ever game against the Armed Forces and we certainly came out fighting!

Winning the toss for the third game running, skipper Russell stuck with a successful formula and chose to bat first, taking to the crease with Andy B. They got the Ultras off to a flying start spraying the ball to all areas of the GCC bowl as RAF Benson were put to the sword.

After Andy fell and Luke followed shortly, Winkers came to the crease and embarked on what proved to be a dominating 102-run partnership which is the highest in the history of the Ultras, beating the previous 98 run partnership by Jim Ross and Dave Roberts.

Some tight bowling in the last 5 overs by Benson restricted the charge to 200 and put paid to Russell’s dreams of a maiden century. Needing 14 off the last five balls to get to 100, your captain succumbed on the penultimate delivery going for 2 boundaries to achieve the milestone.

Jonny Westcar headed to the crease and signed off the innings beautifully with a huge six of his one and only ball faced.

So a imposing target for RAF Benson and tight early bowling from Slade and James made the target unachievable. Another excellent fielding and bowling display with big intensity throughout led to Benson being rolled over for just 68 runs.

Credit to every bowled used and special mentions for Lenny for picking up 3 and Jonny W and Luke for both balling wicket maidens to wrap up the tail – showing how many options the skipper has in his attack. Punter completed another tidy performance behind the stumps picking up a neat catch and conceded no byes for the third game running.

A fantastic effort by everyone to give Ultras a stonking 109 run victory and cement our position at the top of the South Oxfordshire T20 table!

Ultras vs Warborough

After 3 days of rain it seemed unlikely that this game would go ahead, but a break in the clouds on Wednesday afternoon gave us a chance and with a promising evening forecast we gave it a go.

Another superb performance in the field ensued with the Ultras once again keeping things tight and backing the bowlers at every step.

After a steady start by Warborough, the game turned when young Alex McGee entered the fray and caught the edge a number of times as they oppos tried to go after him. This resulted in success as the chances were snaffled by Russell and Everitt and McGee took 2-15 off 4 overs, only denied a third wicket as Russell dropped a tough catch in the slips. A game changing performance by Alex.

Donny, Lenny and Steve kept the pressure up and the Ultras managed to keep the oppos below the magic 100 number – an excellent performance. Matty Norman also put up a sterling shift behind the stumps taking his first GCC catch as keeper.

The euphoria of the performance began to be tainted as we walked off and saw some ominous clouds coming towards us which opened up at the end of the first over of our innings. Surely that was it, but with the 8pm deadline approaching the sun came out and the covers had done their job – it was game on again!

Sadly the next 20 minutes proved to be the first poor period of the Ultras season so fat. Poor is an understatement – the Ultras slumped to a desperate 17-6 as the first loss of the season looked on the cards.

Fortunately, despite the impending gloom Andy B  and the Maestro steadied the ship and started to make the 100 target look gettable. A huge six from Andy took the score to 42 with just over 8 overs to go, but sadly the heavens then opened again and there was no option left but to abandon the game.

A valiant effort to get the game on and we will never know whether the rain saved us from our first defeat or if it denied Pete and Andy a chance to be heroes in the dark!
